One of the things I’m excited to do this fall is go apple picking! I have no clue if there are apple orchards out here in California, but I’m sure we can find something apple-y to do.
I remember when Caleb was 1ish we went apple picking and much to our horror he kept picking apples up off the ground and taking bites.
No matter how much we explained we had to pick. then collect. then pay. then wash. then eat. It was wayy too many steps for a 1 year old to comprehend and we ended up buying a basket of apples all with adorable little bites taken from them.

How to make gluten free apple crisp:
First, peel the skin off the apples and thinly slice them. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil and place the apples in a steaming basket over the boiling water and cover.
Steam for about five minutes until the apples are softened but still appear crunchy and maintain their shape.
While the apples are steaming, place the pecans (any mix of nut and seeds that sounds good to you will work), almond flour, salt, coconut oil, peanut butter, and vanilla in a large bowl. Fold together until combined.
Divide most of the crumble mixture between four ramekins. Use the back of a spoon to press it down in an even layer.
In a medium bowl, mix together the steamed apples, agave nectar (honey or maple syrup works), and cinnamon. Divide the apples between the ramekins.
Finally, crumble the remaining nutty mixture on top of the apples. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of each and enjoy!!

Happy belated birthday, Lindsay! This looks like such a beautifully comforting and sweetly hearty apple crisp. I love how the crisp is vegan-friendly, plus the apples look so gorgeously baked and the topper is nice and brown. And an extra scoop of ice cream on top? Must be a mindblowing dessert!

I literally cannot WAIT to make this recipe because I have about 20 lbs of apples from apple picking last weekend! This sounds amazing, Lindsay!

I am not a cook by any means but tried this last night for some friends and everyone loved it! I only had a 10 10 baking dish which fit the apples fine but the topping looked too skimpy and didn t fully cover the apples so I doubled the topping and it came out great! I couldn t find almond meal so I used flax meal.

Yay! I’m so happy it was a hit!! xo

Hi! Would the same measurements work if I bake this in an 8×8 baking dish?
Lindsay says
I think it would definitely work! Hope you love!! xo
Halie Sutton says
Hi! I’m dying to make this! I don’t have a steaming basket to steam the apples, what would you recommend doing instead?
Thanks!
Lindsay Grimes Freedman says
You could boil or even sauté the apples on low to soften them. Boiling may take some of the flavor out and water them down a little too much, so maybe a slow-sauté until they’re fork-tender is the best option 🙂
Becca says
Hi Lindsey, what can I use besides sugar for the apple crisp? My dad is diabetic
Lindsay Grimes Freedman says
Coconut sugar and agave nectar are low glycemic so even thought it’s higher carb, it will be better with not spiking blood sugar. If you prefer artificial sweetener to keep it low carb, you can definitely sub that in! I’m not too familiar with the different ones out right now so whatever your favorite one is, as long as its a 1:1 sugar substitute, it should work! I hope he loves the crisp!! xo
