Air fryer baked potatoes are going to be your new favorite side dish! My favorite kind of recipe is the kind you can prep ahead and push a button when you’re ready to cook. These potatoes are so simple to cook, making them perfect for any busy week!

Having grown up on baked potatoes, I’ve always loved the little potato boats you can load up with butter. I’ve been known to eat the melty buttery layer and then load it up with butter again and repeat the process. Butter, eat, repeat.

Air fryer baked potato recipe ingredients:

Potatoes. Russet potatoes are best for baked potatoes, but you could also use sweet potatoes if you want!

Oil. I use avocado oil, but you can use any oil you prefer. Sunflower oil or coconut oil are also great options!

Salt. I love using a flakey salt but any salt works!

Pepper. I use freshly ground pepper. It’s not essential to the recipe but adds a nice touch.

Butter. This is my topping of choice, but scroll down a bit for more suggestions and topping ideas!

  • This is a side view of a baked potato on an air fryer tray. The potato has fork piercings on it and is sprinkled with salt. The tray sits on a white counter and another potato is in the bottom right of the image.

How to make air fryer baked potato:

Wash. First you want to wash your potatoes to remove any dirt or debris. Then, pat dry.

Oil and season. Rub the potatoes with oil, salt, and pepper. You also want to pierce the potatoes with a fork a few times to allow any steam out as they cook.

Air fryer. Heat your air fryer to 400F and place the potatoes in the rack, making sure they aren’y overcrowded.

Slice and smush. Once the potatoes are cooled enough to handle, use a knife to slice lengthwise down the center and smush them to loosen the potatoes and open them up.

Add the toppings. Add on whatever toppings you want to the potatoes and serve! These are best served warm!

Tips for making a baked potato in the air fryer:

Use russet potatoes. Russet potatoes are my favorites ones to use because they get a crisp outside and a soft, fluffy, and butter inside. You can also use a sweet potato if you like!

Don’t overcrowd. I used 4 small/medium potatoes. These cook the best when you give the potatoes enough room on the rack so they’re not touching or overcrowded. If you’re making more than 4 potatoes, I would work in batches.

Use small to medium sized potatoes. They not only cook quicker, but you can cook them all at once without overcrowding them.

Air Fryer Baked Potato Topping Ideas:

  • butter
  • fresh herbs
  • bacon
  • sour cream
  • cheddar cheese
  • stuffed taco
  • ranch

How to store and reheat:

Potatoes can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for about 1 week. You can reheat it in the air fryer to give it back that crispy outside and heat it through. Heat in the air fryer for about 400F for about 5 minutes. You can also reheat it in the oven or microwave.
