When spring starts springing I’m all about the lemon blueberry combo. I love it so much I’ve made 25-Min Lemon Blueberry Sheet Pan Pancakes and Lemon Blueberry Bundt Cake to name a few favorites!

Today we’re bringing the sweet and tangy favorite combo into our overnight oats and to keep with the fresh and juicy bursts of fruity flavor, we’re making these overnight oats with water.

Can I Make Overnight Oats with Water?

Absolutely! While I typically make overnight oats with milk, you can definitely make them with water. They are sill soft and creamy and I would argue make them super light and refreshing!

Can I Use Steel Cut Oats?

No, they’re really not the best for overnight oats. Rolled oats absorb the liquid as they sit and get soften whereas steel cut oats don’t and and stay chewy. Go for the rolled oats here!

Prep you jar with a layer of jam. Mix the remaining ingredients in a measuring cup.

How to Make Overnight Oats with Water

Step 1: Add your glaze layer

Ok, this is kind optional. You can just put all the ingredients in the jar, give it a shake and be done. Absolutely! But, I love the look of a pretty blueberry glaze layer on the bottom. It’s just so pretty! Plus when you go to take bites the next morning you can getg varying degrees of juicy blueberry bursts with each bite. With that said, place the blueberry glaze/jam in a glass jar.

Step 2: Mix up the rest of your overnight oats

Place the oats, lemon juice, water, blueberries, agave nectar, chia seeds, and lemon zest in a small bowl or liquid measuring cup. Mix to combine. I like doing this in a separate bowl so that it doesn’t mix up the pretty blueberry jam layer.

Pour the oat mixture into the jar on top of the blueberry jam.

Step 3: Chill your overnight oats with water

Secure the lid on the jar and place in the fridge overnight. In the morning, give the oats a good mix and enjoy!
